Silly Chain

When looking into what “heritage” means to me, I thought about things I held on to for a long time and recently found some “Silly Bandz” from middle school. I started playing with the idea of creating a funky shapes chain inspired by the shaped rubber bands.
This piece is intended to say what I’d love to share with my baby niece as she grows older. Heritage is something that can be shared and passed down to future generations. This piece represents films which were important to my sisters and I’s upbringing that we wish to share with my niece. The chain is made up of shapes that symbolize some of these films.
The following are what films the shapes represent:
• Apple – Snow White
• Tiara – Princess and the Pauper
• Cat – Hocus Pocus
• Flower (“Cloud Flower”) – SpongeBob SquarePants
• Mermaid – The Little Mermaid
• Butterfly – The Corpse Bride
• Ogre – Shrek
• Sock – Monsters Inc.
• Bat – The several vampire films we watch and Batman
• Starfish – Aquamarine
• Guitar – Camp Rock and Hannah Montana
